Relevance: ‘Just One of the Guys’ was not a movie I necessarily remember being in theaters. I don’t think it was a huge box office hit, nor do I think it was critically acclaimed. Also, I was getting ready to graduate from 8th grade and Prince and the Revolution’s “Around the World in a Day” album was just released, so my mind was probably elsewhere. I do however remember when it was on HBO, because I watched it every single time that I could. In fact, my entire family did.
I am guessing that it was sometime in 1986 when we first watched this silly teen comedy, but that first time was definitely not the last. This was a film that the entire family enjoyed and we enjoyed it over and over again. I was maybe fifteen, so I liked the “sex” jokes and the boobs. I’ll take a wild guess that my dad did as well. I’m guessing that my sister enjoyed the aspect of the female lead intelligently fooling all of the guys. (I’ll have to ask her about it the next time I see her.) Shockingly, (that’s sarcasm) my mom enjoyed the romantic comedy aspect of the story . But she also loved the role of the younger brother humorously portrayed by Billy Jacoby (Jayne). She’d laugh at every one of his jokes. In fact, we all did. We laughed at his jokes as well as everyone else’s jokes in the movie. It was a simple but really funny film that made us smile from beginning to end. So of course, like most movies on HBO in the 1980’s, we watched it hundreds of times.
‘Just One of the Guys’ was the quintessential 1980’s teen rom-com. It wasn’t made to win awards, only just to entertain. And entertain it did. Well, at least my family. But since it is ranked as one of the “50 Best High School Movies” by “Entertainment Weekly,” I am sure we weren’t the only ones.
Today’s Thoughts: “It’s okay, everybody. It’s all right. He has tits.”
I probably have not watched ‘Just One of the Guys’ since the 1980’s. Now as you might already know, I absolutely loved the 1980’s and its glorious movies. However, I do cringe sometimes when I re-watch them years later. Sometimes they don’t hold up so nicely and I was actually expecting to cringe quite a bit while watching this today. I was surprisingly wrong.
The story of a female dressing up as a man to be taken seriously holds up quite well after the #metoo movement. I actually found it a little ahead of its time. Sure it is silly and there are many crude sexist jokes, but none meant to harm, only to make us laugh. And it’s okay to laugh. And laugh I did.
Billy Jacoby (Jayne) as Buddy Griffith is still the one with most of the laughs, but Joyce Hyser, in her gender-bending role, is placed in so many silly scenarios, it is difficult not to laugh both at and with her. The rest of the cast, including the always evil school bully Willliam Zabka (at least in a majority of 1980’s movies) were absolutely perfect in their roles. Again, this isn’t Shakespeare. But there’s nothing wrong with what it is, a goofy teen romantic comedy. Sometimes, that’s all you need.
